About Us:
 

Founded in 2017, Capitol Hill Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit committed to gathering, preserving, and sharing the history of the communities that have shaped Capitol Hill.  

We are an all-volunteer run and inclusive organization that welcomes new members without regard to age, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability or veteran status.

 

  

We are looking for talented writers who are passionate about researching, documenting, and analyzing the history of Capitol Hill and/or the process of advocating for and preserving its historical resources.

Potential responsibilities depending on the topic of writing:

  • Take notes, conduct interviews, and perform research on both past and present.

  • Attend Capitol Hill Historical Society, Landmarks Preservation Board, Pike/Pine Urban Neighborhood Council, Design Review board, and possibly other public meetings. (currently on hold until further notice)

  • Keep track of local real estate news (property sales, building demolition, and new construction.)

  • Collaborate with Social Media Coordinator for content sharing.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with or degree in fields such as History, Architectural History, Historic Preservation, Creative Writing, Journalism, Communications, English, or other similar fields.

  • Knowledge of and interest in local history and historic preservation or desire to learn.

  • Experience with genealogical research as well as state, county, and city records repositories both digital and physical or desire to learn.

  • Experience with multiple blogging platforms.

  • Prior freelance writing experience--history writing preferred.

  • Excellent communication and time management skills.

  • Capacity to work with minimal supervision.

  • Self-motivated, disciplined approach to work.

Pay is generally $100 per article.
